This is an effect that is one of the first things you should learn in photoshop, a simple, one-layer effect. It is used all over the web, and is especially common in interfaces.
Difficulty Level - Beginner
Software Requirements - Adobe Photoshop 6 or higher
| Okay. First, set your foreground colour to white, and your background colour to grey (#7D7D7D). Select the gradient tool, and on the toolbar choose the 'Reflected Gradient'. Drag the gradient tool from the centre of the image
to the top-left corner, if you want you can hold shift to keep the line at 45o. |
 |
| Next, go to Filter > Noise > Add Noise. Use these settings to add some noise. Make sure that the monochromatic box is checked, to keep the noise black and white. |
 |
| The final step is to apply a motion blur, to smooth out that noise and achieve the basic brushed metal effect. To do this, go to Filter > Blur > Motion Blur and apply it with these settings to achieve the final effect. |
 |
| Here i added some rust (tutorial coming soon) to show how you could use this basic effect, and make it a bit more interesting. Hope you enjoyed this tutorial, if you have any feedback, dont hesitate to email me at b3ns0n@msn.com
